How the name “Grandfather Clock” came about
Many people wonder how the term ‘grandfather clock’ came about. It actually
originated from North Yorkshire in England. Over a century ago, two brothers ran a
small country lodge called The George Hotel. The Jenkins brothers, both bachelors,
kept a tall floor clock in the lobby area, which had been kept there for many years.
The clock had always been known to keep very good time, which in those days was
quite unusual.
After one of the brother died, the floor clock actually began to lose time. After it
started to losing fifteen minutes each day, clock smiths were called in to take a look at
the timepiece. However, they were unable to do anything and the clock continued to
lose more and more time, eventually losing an hour a day. After the second brother
died, the old clock stopped ticking altogether, and although fully wound never ticked
again. A new hotel manager was assigned, and he left the clock standing in the lobby
still showing the time at which the second brother had passed away.
Years later, and American writer, Henry Work, visited the George Hotel and got to
hear about the tale of the clock. He was so fascinated by the story and by the clock
itself that he decided to write a song about it. Work wrote the classic that most people
are familiar with ‘My Grandfather’s Clock’ and after this time these clocks became
commonly known as grandfather clocks.

Materials
Although most floor clocks are wooden long-case clocks, they can be found in just
about any material. There is brass, marble, glass or even plastic ones nowadays. But,
when one wants to acquire a floor clock, it is usually intended as a family heirloom
clock, and for this reason most buyers look for traditional materials that will not only
stand the test of time, but will remain looking beautiful for generations to come.
If you'd like to buy a floor clock, you have much to choose from! If you don't like the
one of the many beautiful antiques, you might have a modern one in mind, or a new
reproduction. If you want to buy new, you might like to consider "Hermle" Clocks or
"Erwin Sattler" Clocks, as these companies make clocks of very special quality that
will make worthy heirloom clocks of the future. Quite possibly, grandfather clocks
have the most romantic image of all. All the old European families have one, and they
are famous for being passed down from one generation to the next. Although the
most common image of a grandfather clock is that of the tall, wooden affair that sits in
the hallway, grandfather clocks come in all shapes and sizes. Some of them are really
quite small, but the well-known long case or tall case ones can be much taller than a
man. Most grandfather clocks are between 6ft 3in and 8ft tall. Grandfather and
grandmother clocks (the smaller ones) are sometimes called long case clocks or floor
standing clocks. They should be mechanical and driven by spring operated by key or
weight driven which translate the earth’s gravitational force to power the clock. These
can run for 8 days before it needs to be rewind. Although the casing can be made
from any materials the ideal would be wood. This enhances the quality of the chime
and strikes sound from the clock. An ultimate piece of grandfather clock is a perfect
combination of highly engineered mechanism, matured solid exotic wood, detailed
accessories and meticulous craftsmanship. It will sit majestically in your home and will
become a valuable heirloom for generations to come.
